Application Process
How do I apply for the scholarship?

Students can apply through the form linked at the bottom of this page. What's required: student name, school, GPA, 3-5 main extracurricular activities with descriptions, and a couple scholarship-related short answer questions. You also have the optional opportunity to share up to 2 essay drafts you would like feedback on. Once your application form is submitted, you'll be prompted to pay the $100 application fee. After fee confirmation, your application will be reviewed by our admissions team.

What's the application timeline and when will I hear back?

Applications open August 1st and close August 15th. All applicants will receive professional application feedback by August 17th. Scholarship finalists will be notified by August 22nd regarding next steps, with final scholarship decisions announced by August 25th. The cohort program begins the first week of September.

What if I don't have essay drafts ready when I apply?

No problem! Essay drafts are completely optional for your application. We're more interested in your curiosity, willingness to collaborate, and readiness to grow than having polished work ready. If you're selected for the scholarship, we'll help you develop essays from scratch during the program.

Is there financial assistance available for the application fee?

Yes, we offer fee assistance for families experiencing financial hardship. Please email us directly (feiyang@yourepic.consulting) to discuss your situation - we never want cost to be a barrier for motivated students who would benefit from the program.

Can international students or students outside the US apply?

Yes! As long as you can attend our weekly Zoom sessions (we'll work with different time zones), you're welcome to apply. Our program has supported students from various locations who are applying to US colleges.

Student FAQs
What exactly is the Epic Cohort Scholarship Program?

The Epic Cohort Scholarship Program connects 6 students virtually with expert guidance and peer support to transform their college applications through unlimited essay coaching and weekly collaborative sessions. Unlike traditional one-on-one tutoring that creates competition and anxiety, our cohort model builds community where students learn from each other while receiving professional mentorship from former UC Berkeley admissions team members.
"My favorite part about going through the college application process in a cohort rather than on my own was the constant support. Knowing that I always had people to rely on, helped me feel a lot more confident when submitting my college applications/essays since I had received feedback from multiple people." - Emily B., UCLA

"I felt like this was a 3 in one package. I originally thought it would be just a few looks here and there on essays as mentor to student, but honestly this program included aspects I didn't even know it would include: like activities description and vibes... It wasn't a stiff zoom call with awkward conversations, but more like a friend to friend interaction." - Julia L., University of Michigan

How is this different from other college counseling programs?

Most college counseling isolates students in expensive individual sessions with limited revisions, while we provide unlimited brainstorming, drafting, and revision cycles within a supportive peer community. You get collaborative learning with up to 5 other motivated students plus expert guidance, rather than competing alone with generic feedback that leaves you with more questions than answers.
But luckily Fei emailed me about the cohort and it was kind of like I found a lifeboat when I was drowning in confusion. I think the main problem with other sources was that by giving me an example or formula, I was limited to how I could write this essay. In this cohort program I never felt like I was limited to anything." - Julia L.

I'm not a strong writer yet - am I even eligible?

Perfect! We love working with raw ideas and rough drafts because the goal is discovering your authentic voice, not starting with polished work. We're looking for students who are curious, collaborative, and ready to grow, not students who think they have it all figured out.
"Initially, I was a little bit nervous of navigating the whole college application process because I didn't know if my writing was good enough to receive the support needed to make my applications as competitive as possible, but being part of this group quickly calmed those nerves." - Emily B.

How do you select scholarship recipients?

We look for students who demonstrate curiosity, willingness to collaborate, and readiness to grow, valuing authenticity over perfection. We're not seeking students with already-perfect applications, but rather those who show potential and genuine interest in discovering their unique voice through the collaborative process.

How does this prepare me for college beyond just applications?

The program helps you rediscover who you were in the past and clarify what kind of person you want to be in the future. Students report gaining concrete future aspirations beyond generic goals like "I want to go to medical school," developing self-awareness and direction that serves them throughout college and beyond.

"I would say this cohort experience has changed the way I listen and the way I help. A big part of this experience was not only listening to ways I could improve, but also listening to the other student's stories that were being told through her essays... Overall, I think I felt much more confident in my own abilities, but also my abilities to help those around me."- Emily B.

What if I don't click with the other students in my cohort?

Our structured collaboration is professionally facilitated with clear goals and shared learning objectives. The diversity of perspectives actually enhances rather than hinders growth, and students consistently report that the peer learning component becomes the highlight of their experience.
"What surprised me the most about learning from other students in the cohort was how our different personal experiences shaped the way we answered the same prompt. Going into this cohort program, I knew I would receive great feedback, but I didn't expect how much feedback from someone else my age, going through the same process, would change my own perspectives and open up my own ways of thinking."- Emily B.

Parent FAQs
What's the real cost breakdown and what value is my child getting from this?

You pay a $100 application fee that includes professional essay review from our former UC Berkeley admissions team, regardless of scholarship outcome. The 6 scholarship recipients receive the complete Gold program package worth over $6,500, while typical college counseling charges $300-500 per essay with limited revisions.

Package details
"I would tell them that the investment is definitely worth it... To me, investing into your success is always worth it, but being part of this cohort is a great example of that, because not only did I have the support to get into a top university, but I continue to have that support even after being admitted into college." - Emily B

The investment is 100% worth it, but I feel like there’s some things you can’t reallydescribe in words. I can’t write down everything I’ve experienced within the past year of college apps: mental support, essay feedback, etc. Working with Fei has been the highlight of my tiring college apps experience. To have a “teacher” care about more than what they’re supposed to do and go out of their way to care for a student’s mental health is rare to find these days.
- Julia L

How do we know this program delivers results?

Our recent scholarship recipients gained acceptance to Columbia University, UCLA, University of Michigan, USC, and UCSD, with one receiving a $120,000 merit scholarship. We have established partnerships with organizations like Apex for Youth, NAAPIMHA, Summit Stem Fellowship and UCLA Bruin Business 100, and every testimonial comes from actual students who experienced measurable success through our coaching process.
"Seeing the differences in my admissions process versus the experiences of my friends' admissions processes, made me realize just how much this cohort program helped me. They often found themselves questioning their writing and lacking confidence in the applications they were submitting, but I felt completely different." - Emily B

"Many parents spend thousands on their kids' college essay programs and I really don't see the need in doing that. This cohort program was free this year, but the quality was probably better than any of the other programs." - Julia L., University of Michigan

How do you handle privacy and sharing of personal stories?

Students choose what to share and when, with our focus on learning feedback techniques together rather than exposing private details. Since authentic stories come from individual experiences, no two students can write the same essay anyway, making collaboration helpful rather than competitive.
"My essays gained a lot more emotion, description, and impact for the readers by sharing those personal stories with other my cohort. I knew that in order receive true feedback and improve my essays, I would need to be somewhat vulnerable, but I always felt comfortable to do so." - Emily B

What happens after my child gets into college?

We provide continued mentorship through college decisions, optional consultation for additional support, and ongoing guidance as students transition to their next chapter. Our relationship doesn't end at acceptance letters - we support families through the college selection process and early college transition.
"Feiyang has stayed connected with me even after the college application process by checking on me and still always being willing to help, showing that he cares beyond getting us into college." - Emily B

How do you ensure quality with only 6 students?

The small cohort size allows for intensive individual attention, unlimited revisions, and personalized strategy meetings tailored to each student's goals. Our former UC Berkeley admissions team members can provide thorough feedback and guidance that would be impossible with larger groups.
"Fei and Jwong were with me through the whole process: from the essays to the activities to the interviews. They acted as a guide for each step of the way going above and beyond for the student purely because they actually want to help.

"I remember when I filled out the application for this cohort scholarship, I was really worried that the advice given would be sugar-coated and very broad like how all my other friends would say 'you need to fix this part'. To my surprise, Fei commented on specific parts of each essay with a paragraph of how to fix it and his questions for deeper thinking."
- Julia L.

What have previous parents said about the impact Feiyang has had on their child's college applications?

"Feiyang really took the time to listen to our daughter. Instead of dictating to her what he thought she should do, he carefully and meticulously took time to understand her as not just a student/candidate but as a person and individual which made her feel more comfortable and in control of a very important process." - Parents of student attending Johns Hopkins University

"We heard about Feiyang's service almost 2-3 days prior to the ED deadline. But his great comments and powerful essay editing really helped us understand what should be the right strategy for essays. My son's essays are much better than the version already approved from our contracted college counselor."- Parent of student attending Emory University

"If you’re the type of parent that wants your kid to end up at the perfect school for them with some help to “stand up straighter" as Feiyang puts it (and tell their most authentic story), then go with Feiyang! Through her work with Feiyang, our kid became wiser and more confident and more comfortable."- Parent of student accepted to UCLA & UC Berkeley
